The story of Organic Fijian Turmeric

If you’ve ever eaten curry, you may have been impressed with its amazing yellow color. Well, that color is turmeric! Turmeric is a cousin to ginger and has been used with versatility in India for over three thousand years, as an important an important ingredient in cooking, religious ceremonies, dyes, and medicines.

The history of Turmeric
The golden spice, as turmeric is often referred to, is also an integral part of Indonesian culture and the cultures of other Southeast Asian countries. In the 17th century, when the East India Company first arrived in India, they fell in love with turmeric. Indian merchants started selling ground turmeric and curry powders to the explorers and merchants to take back to England and the rest of Europe.

In Hindu weddings, turmeric is sacred. A string dyed yellow with turmeric paste, is tied as a necklace around the bride’s neck by her groom. This indicates that the woman is ready to run their new household.

Turmeric is still used to dye all sorts of clothing, even the robes of Buddhist monks! It’s also used in cosmetics to give a person a golden glow. More familiar to most, though you may not know it however, is that turmeric is what gives prepared mustard it’s vivid yellow color.

Most people have heard of ancient Chinese medicine, but by comparison, have not heard of Ayurveda.  Ayurveda is the analogous natural healing system of India and is still practiced today. Practitioners commonly use turmeric as an anti-inflammatory and treatment for other ailments. Treatments include inhaling turmeric fumes to help with congestion and a turmeric poultice or paste to treat skin ailments. The name of turmeric in Ayurveda literature is jayanti, meaning “one who is victorious over diseases.”

The power of Curcumin
Modern science has found that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has potent anti-inflammatory properties and can be linked to a host of health benefits. It has also been shown to be potent antioxidant and an aid in digestive health. Curcumin has been the subject of several studies and has been shown to help reduce symptoms of several chronic diseases.
Turmeric and Battling Inflammation

Turmeric and Inflammation
Turmeric has long been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. But just what is inflammation? Ironically, inflammation is a defense mechanism designed to protect the body against invaders and is a normal reaction, but sometimes it can create more difficulties than it solves.  It often occurs when the body is injured or when invaders, such as bacteria or viruses are detected. Inflammation can cause skin tissue to develop redness, heat, become swollen or stiff, and or become painful. Excessive or recurring inflammation not only can be painful, it can become dangerous. Symptoms of excessive inflammation may include fatigue, fever, rash, and chest, abdominal, or joint pain. Inflammation can occur in almost any part of the body, including the gut, lungs, gums (there’s a reason your dentist always tells you to floss), and even within blood vessels.

So, inflammation is some bad stuff! Inflammation slows down the processes in the body and prolonged inflammation can actually slow healing, instead of promoting it. What’s even worse is that   prolonged inflammation can lead to long-term disorders. It can interfere with the body’s ability to repair bone mass, may contribute to heart disease, can cause rashes and skin disorders, and even lead to autoimmune issues like Chron’s, Celiac, and more. Harvard medical school has even referred to inflammation as the “common underlying cause of major degenerative diseases.”

Even lack of sleep can help promote inflammation. It is during sleep is when our body flushes toxins, repairs damage done by foreign invaders, and reverses many other triggers of inflammation.  Inadequate sleep means that the body does not have time to complete these crucial tasks.  Other chronic contributors are trans-fatty acids, refined sugars, and processed foods.
What can be done to fight inflammation? This is where turmeric can help. Simply put, turmeric is a tasty way to consume one of the world’s most potent natural anti-inflammatory substances, curcumin. And by fighting inflammation throughout the body, turmeric can help with overall gut health, digestive health, and heart health.  With reduced inflammation, also come less muscle soreness, joint stiffness, as well as other aches and pains.

Your body's Core Four areas of health
At Wakaya, we believe that the core of our body’s health has four simple, yet powerful elements; healthy digestion, reduced inflammation, daily detoxification, and essential nutrients.

Poor health often starts with poor digestion.  The surface area of our digestive system on the inside can be up to 170 times greater than that of our skin on the outside.  The overuse of antibiotics combined with toxins in our diet can create imbalanced bacterial and yeast growth, leading to many uncomfortable situations.  Poor digestion can be causing our bodies to under-react sometimes – letting bad substances in – and overreact other times with severe and deadly allergies as a result.

Inflammation at the cellular level is at the root of most chronic health challenges.  It is the silent killer that doesn’t discriminate – it effects the poor and the wealthy – no matter your age or ethnicity, inflammation is working 24/7 to lower your quality of life and can even shorten that life.
Our modern lifestyle is fraught with toxins and impurities.  Pesticides, herbicides, artificial ingredients and preservatives…  Even “healthy diets” cannot always avoid plastics, chemical residues and Genetically Modified Foods.  A daily detox regimen is essential because we’re exposed to these toxins every single day.

Even with Digestion, Inflammation, and toxins under control, today’s high-tech foods, depleted soils, and modern harvesting methods have created great looking, but nutrient starved foods.  It is vital that we supplement our healthy diets with key essential nutrients that are not only absorbable, but effective building blocks of good health.
